The Colorado Department of Transportation has partnered with the Colorado State Patrol to recognize April as National Distracted Driving Awareness month.

A recent study of Colorado residents showed the ongoing thread of distracted drivers on the road.  A great percentage of our population here in CO are hardworking, outdoor loving Americans… however rushing to get the mountain, the trail or the office may result in never actually reaching your destination.  22% of participants in the recent study admitted to viewing text messages while driving while 33% admitted to talking on a hand held device. Now a days you can pop into almost any gas station or convenient store and purchase ear buds that connect to your phone making it hands free while in transportation; most phones now come with these attachments to encourage safe driving.  We’re busy people, we’re also smart – so let’s act smart!

Encourage your loved ones to be more mindful on the road… Stay tuned to CDOT’s facebook page for updates all throughout the month of April. Let’s spread awareness and keep the roads safe!

Here at Gateway Real Estate we work with our clients in covering all aspects of home ownership; Radon testing and awareness is typically over looked so we’re here to promote this months advocacy in Radon Action Awareness
radon_checklist
You can easily purchase an at home Radon testing kit online that gives detailed information on how to execute these at home kits. Shaw Regional Cancer Center has joined forces with Energy Smart Colorado and the Eagle County Department of Environmental Health to highlight the problem.  In particular, with January being federally recognized as Radon Action Month, the health center has designated its location in Edwards as one of the places in the county to pick up a testing kit for free!
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that is caused by the breakdown of uranium. It’s odorless and colorless and extremely prevalent around the state of Colorado and is the second leading cause of lung cancer…Radon is a dense gas, so it tends to leak into lower areas of the home — basements and crawlspaces — and while these might not be the spots where household members congregate, the accumulation of radon throughout time can still have a toxic effect on in-home air quality.
Share these notes with friends and family to promote Radon Action month and to avoid major issues in your home!

Mitigating the problem – the fix is fairly simple…
Some building codes in Eagle County regulate that homes must be built with a passive mitigation system — a pipe from a lower building level — that makes it even easier to lessen high levels of household radon if they’re detected.
Gateway hopes this knowledge will encourage you to become more familiar with the affects of Radon and preventative measure you can take to avoid danger in your home!

On Monday-November 14th, you will be lucky enough to experience a front row seat to the largest Super Moon since 1948! A Super Moon or Perigee Moon appears to balloon up to 14% larger than an Apogee full Moon (traditional moon) and beams up 30% brighter!

November 25th, 2034 will be your next opportunity to witness this spectacular gift of nature, so be sure to savor this moment. The best way to see this interstellar stunner is in a dark, open area, but, if you would like to add some bigger then life illusions to your experience, catch the moon as it rises along the horizon! It will appear even more magnificent!

The moons’ peak will be at 6:52 am on Monday morning, not to worry, that does not mean that it won’t be brilliant that evening, you might even need to wear your sunglasses!

Eagle County‘s first Trophy Home dates back 6,000 years! Built buy nomadic Native Americans, the historical, well preserved Yarmony Pit House was in use through the 1800’s. Native American’s nestled at this site during the long Colorado winters, using this habitation for hunting grounds for thousands of years! They gathered here prior to the Anasazi  Indians creating Colorado’s Mesa Verde and well before the Great Pyramids of Egypt or Stonehenge were erected!

Pg27-2

First unearthed in 1987 near State Bridge, the Yarmony Pit House is one of Colorado‘s oldest archaeological sites. Discovered accidentally during a routine road improvement project, Yarmony Pit House soon changed the previously held perception as to how far north Native Americans wintered.

Over 4,000 unscathed artifacts were unearthed during the excavation headed by Michael D. Metcalf. To preserve the Yaromony site, archaeologist’s have back-filled the area with sand. This not only preserves the integrity of the pit houses, but will also allow future archaeologist’s to re-explore this area without further contamination or erosion to the site. Metcalf would like to expand the survey to include more of Colorado’s River valleys with the intent of discovering more Native American Pit Houses, which will in turn fill in some of the gaps in our Colorful Colorado history!
