The 2016/2017 ski season has officiallyclosed in Vail and Beaver Creek.  Vail closed on Sunday, April 23rd.  It’s time to gear up for the summer activities that Vail and Beaver Creek have to offer.  One of my favorite activities in the spring and early summer is whitewater rafting.  The snowpack is a little lower than normal and river enthusiasts are already enjoying the water early this year.  Class I to Class V river trips are available on the Eagle, Colorado and Arkansas Rivers.  Take a day to enjoy the thrills of a half day, full day or multi-day river trip designed for beginner to advanced paddlers.

If you are planning a multi-day trip, Down River Equipment, a rafting retailer in Wheatridge, has some tips for making your trip successful.  First, identify the river which best fits your group.  If you were lucky enough to draw a permit, then you need to build your team, based on experience, group dynamics and willingness to pitch in.  Make a plan to include where to meet and how vehicles will be shuttled.  Make a gear list taking in account weather, activities and class of rapids.  Delegate tasks so that one person isn’t stuck doing everything for the trip.  Make a budget so everyone shares in the cost of food and the river permit.  Plan a menu keeping in mind people’s diet restrictions and limited prep time on the river.  Execute the plan and go with the flow if unexpected obstacles occur.  After the trip is over, clean your gear, return any borrowed gear and refund any left over money.  Share photos and look forward to your next trip.

This past week the new Aspen Skiing Company and KSL Capital Partners alliance acquired the Eastern Sierra’s Mammoth Mountain, June Mountain, Snow Summit and Bear Mountain, giving the partnership more than 6,000 acres of southern California ski terrain across four resorts that host more than 2 million visits a year.   No price has been announced yet but in 2005 the resort traded hands for $365 million.  This is just two days after the announcement that Aspen Skiing Company and KSL Capital Partners were buying Intrawest Resort Holdings for $1.5 billion which included Steamboat and Winter Park, which gives them an additional 10 new ski areas to add to their rich roster, which includes Aspen Snowmass and Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows.

A new multi-resort pass for Aspen Skiing Company and KSL looks very promising.  Maybe not for 2017-2018, but a ski pass rivaling the $869 Epic Pass for 2018-2019 seems certain.  Vail Resorts’ Epic Pass offers unlimited skiing at more than 40,000 acres spread across 11 major resorts in Colorado, California, Utah, Vermont and British Columbia not counting three urban resorts in the Midwest.  A pass offered by Aspen Skiing Company and KSL Capital Partners would offer skiing on more than 25,000 acres spread across 15 resorts in four states and Canada.  In the resort industry, it’s becoming apparent that the season pass revenue is the proven financial engine, as shown by Vail Resorts which sold more than 650,000 Epic Pass this past year.

There is a lot of speculation that there will be future acquisitions by Aspen Skiing Company and KSL Capital Partners before the winter of 2017/2018.  Many believe it will be based largely on geographic battles with climate change in mind.

On Monday, Aspen Skiing Company and KSL Capital Partners, shake up the ski industry with a deal to buy Intrawest Resorts for $1.5 Billion including debt.  The deal includes Steamboat and Winter Park in Colorado, Showshoe in West Virginia and Stratton in Vermont, along with Canada’s  Mont Tremblant, Blue Mountain and Canadian Mountain Holidays, the world’s largest heli-skiing operator based in Banff, Alberta.

It’s a big move for Aspen, which currently operates four resorts in the Roaring Fork Valley; Aspen, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk and Snowmass.  The two companies will form a new entity to run the Intrawest resorts.  Aspen’s previous holdings will continue to be manage exclusively by Aspen.  According to the press release, there will not be any changes to the 2017-2018 Mountain Collective Pass, which includes Aspen and Squaw or the M.A.X. pass which includes Intrawest resorts.  But look for a new pass to come out as ski areas view season passes that allow skiing at multiple resorts as a vital business strategy.

Vail Resorts is suddenly facing some new competition in an escalating battle of consolidation.  In the past year, Vail Resorts has spent $1.1 billion for three-quarters of Canada’s Whistler Blackcomb ski area and $50 million for Vermont’s Stowe in an aggressive expansion plan.  The company expects to spend $103 million this year upgrading it’s resorts.  At Vail Mountain, Vail Resorts will replace the Northwoods Express with a six-person high speed chairlift.  At Breckenridge, the Peak 10 Falcon Chair will be upgraded with a six-person high speed chair.  At Keystone, the Montezuma chair will be replaced with a six-person high speed chair and at Beaver Creek, the two-person Drink of Water chair will be replaced with a four person high speed chair.

Vail Resorts also plans to invest $6 million this year 2017 for the Epic Discovery summer activities with the bulk of that being spent at Breckenridge with more modest spending at Vail and Heavenly to expand existing facilities.

Combined skier numbers for Aspen’s four mountains has remained steady around 1.5 million for a few years.  Vail Mountain welcomed 1.6 million skiers in 2015-2016 with Beaver Creek coming in with 919,000 skiers.

 

 

Spring Skiing in Vail

Springtime in the Colorado Rockies is upon us with bluebird days, warm temperatures and soft snow.  Spring Back to Vail is one of Vail’s premier events which takes place April 14 -16th featuring a free live concert, the famous World Pond Skimming Championship, Après after dark parties, and base area giveaways.

On Saturday, April 15th, 123GO! Project will kick off the Spring Back to Vail celebration at Ford Park with a free concert presented by Bud Light.  The venue opens at 5:30 and the music starts at 6:00.  123GO! Project, is a rock n roll super group featuring Lead Guitar Mike McCready (Pearl Jam), Lead vocals Brett Scallions (Fuel), and Bass Stefan Lessard (Dave Mathews Band) and Kenneth Schalk is the heavy hitter drummer that will round out the band.

The spring tradition of dressing in costume and skimming across icy waters in hopes of making it to the other side in the 15th Annual World Pond Skimming Championship on Sunday, April 16th.  The top male and female contestant will be awarded the grand prize of a 2017-2018 Vail Resorts Epic Pass and a pair of Liberty skis.  The contestant defies the laws of physics and common sense as a panel of judges scores each competitor on distance, style, creativity and water resistance.  The contest starts at 3:00 at the Golden Peak venue.

Pond Skimming

The other events taking place over the weekend is the Tikis and Tunes Luau at Sarge’s at Mid Vail on Saturday, April 15th from 12:00 – 3:00 featuring a Pig Roast, drink specials, live music,  games and giveaways.

Easter Eggs

The Egg Hunt returns to Harry A. Nottingham Park in Avon on Saturday, April 15th from 10:00 am – 12:00 noon.  Families are invited to participate in this free community event, which includes a coloring contest, jelly bean guessing game, kids mountain bike course, a balloon artist and the Avon Bunny.

Thousands of eggs will be filled with toys and candy.  The hunting of eggs will be organized by height and participants will be checked in at the Town of Avon tent for their wrist bands.  There will be three Egg Hunts and the children 3 years and under will have their own special area with their own bouncy house and Egg Hunt.

Park Hyatt

Park Hyatt Beaver Creek Resort and Spa has been purchased by a Dallas-based firm, Ashford Hospitality Prime, Inc. for a price of $145 million which is $766,000 per room.  The purchase of the iconic Park Hyatt Beaver Creek Resort and Spa was completed in just 3 weeks.  The Park Hyatt earned Forbes’ Four Star rating and AAA’s Four Diamond rating.  It was one of nine Colorado resorts on Conde Nast Traveler’s Top Hotels in The American West, part of its annual Reader Choice Awards.

The Ashford Hospitality Prime purchase of the 190-room Park Hyatt tops last years Vail Four Seasons sales price of $121 million to a New York Company and it’s Asian Partner. The Vail Cascade Resort and Spa sold last year for $90 million which was a 292-room resort finishing a $50 million dollar renovation.  The Vail Holiday Inn  also traded hands in January and was bought by a private East Coast group for $22.4 million.  It is being renovated and being re-positioned to be a Double Tree Hotel.

That’s right; now we can get our fill on Expert Burger as it’s made Lionshead a new home for their wildly delicious burgers!

Midwestern girl at heart I always enjoy a tasty burger! With great excitement I headed down to Expert Burger’s new location in Lionshead, concert hall plaza area and made myself comfortable on their sunny outdoor deck as I awaited lunch…

Let me start at the beginning…. Walking through Lionshead there’s a buzz in the air with excited riders, happy tourists, the wagging tails of puppies and the sweet Colorado sunshine above us.  Expert Burger has a great location with cozy seating.   Their menu ranges from classic YUM to exotic, “that sounds so crazy it must be delicious!”  Not a soda drinker? Me either! BUT Expert Burger offers a refreshing selection of Rocky Mountain Soda soft drinks; which are less guilty as they’re not filled with crap! Not to mention the not so traditional soda flavors… So I splurged for an icy cup of black cherry soda pop!  I went ahead and ordered the Meribel on a 100% beef patty!!! This burger comes with brie cheese, bacon and tomato jam.  The flavors threw my taste buds for a loop, not to say I didn’t enjoy it but perhaps next time I’ll order a more classic burger!

Check it out for yourself! Prices are honest, the environment is comfortable and the staff was prompt and kind!

Eagle Vail’s Mikaela Shiffrin becomes the fifth American to win the overall World Cup globe.  She  joins Phil Mahre,(1981,1982, 1983) Bode Miller (2006, 2008) Lindsey Vonn (2008, 2009, 2010, 2012) and Tamara McKinney.   Tamara McKinney was the first American woman to win the overall title.  Mikaela finished a solid 318 points ahead of second-place Iika Stuhec of Slovenia.  Mikaela also clinched her fourth slolom title in five years.  She has 31 career World Cup victories, only two short of tying Bode Miller for second all-time in the U.S. racing history.  Lindsey Vonn is first with 77 wins.  We look forward to watching Mikaela Shiffrin next season!
