Winter has finally arrived in FORCE!!  Vail Mountain received 12" of fresh snow last night!!  And that's after receiving 11" of powder the night before.  So for all of you math whizzes out there that's almost 2 FEET in the past 48 hours.

Vail Pass has been closed in both directions since this morning so for those lucky enough to be here in the Vail Valley, the slopes shouldn't be too crowded!  There's nothing quite like Vail on a powder day, especially one without many skiers or snowboarders out there.

Vail Resorts announced yesterday that they are acquiring Kirkwood Resort in Lake Tahoe, CA for approximately $18 million.  Epic Pass holders now have another awesome option for where to make their turns!  Check out the Vail Daily's article about the purchase.

Vail Resorts purchased Lake Tahoe's Kirkwood Mountain Resort as well as undeveloped land zoned for residential and commercial use  for $18 million today. The purchase completes Vail's ownership of three mountain ski resorts in the Lake Tahoe region which include Heavenly Mountain and Northstar California. The deal is scheduled for completion next month and will be Vail Resorts' seventh resort. 

Heavenly and Northstar pass holders now have access to Kirkwood and vice versa, expanding the value of the pass tremendously. Chairman and CEO of Vail Resorts Rob Katz said, “When combined with Heavenly and Northstar, we will be able to offer our guests and pass holders unparalleled value with the very best that Lake Tahoe has to offer.” This comes as great news for Epic Pass and Epic Local Pass holders as well because as of today, these pass holders have unrestricted use of Kirkwood Mountain.

Vail's Carnivail, the largest annual Mardi Gras celebration at 8,150 feet above sea level, is scheduled for Sunday, February 19th and Tuesday, February 21st. 

The world's largest low-country crawfish boil is being held on Sunday, February 19th at the Eagle's Nest Deck on Vail Mountain from 12-2:30 with live music from The Laughing Bones.

The Fat Tuesday Parade and Bud Light Street Party in Vail Village is on Tuesday, February 21st. The venue opens at 3:00 with the parade starting 4:00 pm followed by a free concert with Frogs Gone Fishin.  Come out and join the fun!

Vail Mountain reported 4" of new snow overnight, 8" in the past 48 hours, and 2 FEET of snow over the past week!  The skiing conditions are vastly improved from the dry spell earlier this season.  All lifts are operating and 98% of the runs are open.  The weather service is predicting chances of snow periodically over the next 10 days.  Winter is here and we're loving it!

Beaver Creek is reporting 3" of new snow, 6" in the past 48 hours and 18" of snow over the past week.  All lifts are running with 97% of the runs open.

Skiers and snowboarders are enjoying Colorado blue skies and fresh snow.  After waiting for the weather to cooperate, it appears our usual patterns are back and snowfall is in the forecast.  And just in time for the Presidents' Week Holiday.

What To Do In Edwards, CO!

I am an avid follower of Robert Genetski of Classical and he is finally seeing some signs of economic recovery for the U.S. His February newsletter  he says the Federal Reserve increased bank reserves by 23% and for the past six months the increase was up to 35%. This is compared to a 5% annual increase in 2009 and 2010. He also mentions that when reserves move up the first indication is in the form of rising stock prices. The good news for us is that usually follows improvement in other indicators such as in the housing sector. Tracking liquidity this year should indicate future financial developments and hopefully will be an indicator of an increased spending pace this year from 4% to 6%. The increase in reserves appears to be impacting bank loans and December bank loans actually increased at an annual pace of 12%.

Stock prices and housing inventory are considered sensitive indicators and in December existing housing inventory fell to the lowest level since the recession began. In Denver, Buyers closed on 2,470 residential properties, which was a 14.6% increase over January, 2010. The number of homes for sale in Denver declined 5% from December and 41% from a year ago – another strong sign of recovery in Colorado.

Genetski is forecasting a 6% increase in current dollar spending for the coming year, which is a strong indicator for the economy in general and a stronger sign of a housing recovery. This also points to a rise in the GDP which also fuels inflation. He suggests that we could see a 2% rise in that indicator as well. With the Federal Reserve showing its intent to keep interest low until Fall of 2014, the chance of long term rates going up are minimal. All of these economic trends bode welll for the housing market, and I am looking to the summer of this year to be a strong rise in sales for the Vail Valley.
