The excitement level was high way before the lifts opened at both Gondola One and the Eagle Bahn gondola. Actually the ribbon was cut on Chair 8 in Lionshead as some of the fanatics had slept all night in front of the lift for the first run. Apparently, Lindsay Vonn was there to welcome the first skiers on the mountain.

There were 21 trails and seven lifts open so the skiers could choose pretty much anything on the front side of the mountain. Conditions were reported as excellent and the skiers flocked in all day until closing. Normally only Born Free is open on the first day, but on Friday, there were over 500 acres of great terrain. in addition to the hooting and hollering on the mountain, all the shop keepers in both villages were happy with all the business the opening brought them. While the Blu Cow hot dog stand was brisk, so also were all the ski shops, which had lots of tunes and base repairs to make.

Now we are open and the village is alive again, come visit us in the Sitzmark Building across from the International Bridge and ask for Judd Babcock to give you  a tour of the mountain as well as some of the real estate available.

With all the snow we have had over the past two weeks, Vail opens its 2014/2015 season with over 500  acres of terrain and 7 lifts. Both gondolas from the Village and Lions Head will shuttle skiers up to the Avanti lift and the Wildwood Express and the Mountain Top Express. The Vail Daily reports that the ski area received over 2 feet of snow and now has an 18″ base. Last year the mountain opened with only 130 acres of terrain. In addition, more snow is expected this weekend with four to seven inches by Sunday morning. “The weather pattern we will see next week is called ‘Northwest Flow’, and it has a history of producing more snow than expected”, according to Joel Gratz of Open

This is a huge year for the Vail Mountain ski areas as Beaver Creek hosts the 2015 World Championships. Although most of the race courses will be covered by ice, the new snow is a welcome addition to making the ski area compatible to all the skiers who will attend the Championships.
