Founded in 1996, The Bookworm of Edwards started in a van. Kathy Westover would travel between coffee shops selling new books to down-valley readers. The next summer, she partnered with former bookkeeper Neda Jansen to open an actual bricks-and-mortar bookstore in November 1997. The Bookworm drastically jumped in size from the back seat of a van to 700 square feet.

So the next time you’re in The Riverwalk pop into Gateway Real Estate and introduce yourself to one of our awesome local brokers! Then you can prowl across the street and enjoy the wonderful surroundings of Vail Valley’s independent bookstore, The Bookworm.

Being a Colorado mover and shaker myself I am itching to see snow fall and get on top of the mountain; thankfully The Bookworm over in Edwards Riverwalk keeps me creative and intrigued with their long list of fun free to-do’s…

The Bookworm not only is conveniently located near across the street to our Gateway Real Estate office in Edwards but they share many options for tasty healthy eats as well as ‘keep you going’ drinks like their americano which is my personal favorite.

This week the Bookworm shares with us the stories of Doug Coombs as he will be live and in the flesh at The Bookworm discussing his life as a legendary extreme skier traveler. If you haven’t picked up the thrilling read, Tracking the Wild Coomba: The Life of Legendary Skier Doug Coombs I suggest you do as it gets readers in the mood for ski season and quiets some of our fears as extreme mountain seekers.

So while we’re still praying for snow take a stroll over to Edwards… Take a browse at the copious listings we have in beautiful Colorado and elsewhere and we invite you to come into our office; sit down with a broker and get those questions answered.  The Bookworm hosts Doug Coombs this Thursday November 10th from 4-6PM

Located in the Heart of Homestead, at the top of the 1st Filing, is the Crown Jewel of the Neighborhood, the recently remodeled Homestead Court Club!

A mere 10 minutes west of Vail, Colorado ~ wildly popular Edwards is an easy place to be!  Situated on the Eagle River, Edwards is comprised of roughly 100 businesses and retail stores, post office, movie theaters, restaurants, medical services and SUN!  Notoriously warmer than Vail and sunnier ~ many folks call it home!  I am among them, having owned homes in both Singletree and Homestead, the original subdivisions of this unincorporated portion of the Eagle County.  Though not formally a “town”, Edwards was, a few years ago, voted “Best Ski Town in America!”  Who knew a sunny little expanse in the Valley once home to cattle, a gas station that sold donuts & coffee and eventually a quarry would ever go onto to earn that moniker!

Centrally located, Edwards is designed for and all about Dining, Shopping, Fishing, Skiing, Bicycle Riding, Hiking, Cross-Country Skiing, Snowboarding, Kayaking, River Rafting, Mountain Climbing, Horseback Riding, Skateboarding and so much more!

Strategically located, Edwards and Homestead are convenient to the Eagle County Regional Airport and Jet Center, Steamboat Springs, Vail, Beaver Creek, Arrowhead, Breckenridge, Copper Mountain, Keystone, Aspen, Snowmass AND Denver!  Roughly 100 miles east via Interstate 70 this commute now boasts a peak-volume express lane east out of the mountains once over the Eisenhower-Johnson Tunnels! In Edwards lies the beloved Riverwalk Village commercial area, the heart of Edwards.

When I moved to the Vail Valley in 1993 and began practicing real estate, Homestead was just gaining traction as a neighborhood. The Master Developer, Robert Warner, Jr. was busy building townhomes in what is affectionately known as Middle Homestead (Filing 3).  Not much development in Edwards at the time, there were swirls of dust flying around Homestead and I could tell it was shaping up to be a wonderful Neighborhood and that something big was about to happen; that something turned out to be Filing 2 in Upper Homestead where I went on to sell many of the first dozen lots sold and then onto represent a Canadian Developer, Glen Wood (Canwest LLC) in the creation and sale of numerous luxury new construction projects both there and across the interstate in Singletree!  In 1998 I became an Owner of a Canwest Home in Singletree and then in 2006 I made my move to become a Homestead Homeowner and have owned in Lower Homestead (Filing 1) ever since!

Homestead is composed of 760 acres, 3 filings of single-family homes, town homes and multi-family housing accommodating a great mix of singles, families, retirees and second homeowners. We have approximately 835 residences and over 400 acres of open space within our planned unit development, and at the center of it all is The Homestead Court Club.  Nearby is the core of the Open Space providing protected areas to hike forever more!  Grab your dog and head to the main Trail Head located off of Cameron Place in Middle Homestead.

Twenty-three years later, Homestead is 95% built out, the landscaping and trees have matured over the decades and the Home Owner’s Association has accomplished much including a land swap that created an open space preserve for all to enjoy.
