This annual event promises an adrenaline-fueled adventure as participants ascend 2,200 vertical feet of meticulously groomed trails to reach the majestic Eagle’s Nest atop the Eagle Bahn Gondola in Lionshead. Whether you’re a seasoned skier, snowboarder, or a passionate winter runner, this race offers an unforgettable experience amidst the breathtaking backdrop of the Rockies.

LEGACY | Honoring a Trailblazer

The Vail Mountain Winter Uphill Race is more than just a sporting event; it’s a tribute to the late Lyndon Ellefson, a beloved figure in the Vail community and a pioneer in U.S. mountain running. Ellefson’s legacy lives on through this event, which he helped initiate, and a portion of the entry fees continues to support the U.S. Mountain Running Team.

A Tradition of Adventure For over fourteen years, the Vail Mountain Winter Uphill Race has captivated participants, offering a challenge to some and a leisurely community hike to others. Founded in 2008 by Ellen Miller and Hooker Lowe, both passionate mountain runners and locals of Vail, the race celebrates the spirit of uphill skiing and mountain running while honoring Ellefson’s memory.
